When it comes into the winter months, our skin faces all sorts of harsh weather conditions. It can go days without seeing sunshine then be heading full steam ahead into blistering cold winds. Lets face it, since most of us go into hibernation mode, it is easy to neglect looking after the skin that lies beneath the twelve layers of tights, hoodies, scarves, doonas and Netflix for a solid 4 months of the year, but when the time comes to strip all that off, you want your skin to ready to go, feeling fresh, hydrated and ready for those hot summer adventures. So here are your Ten ‘Winter Skin’ Commandments. Do them all and do them well!

1.     CLEANSE

Find a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type. If you find that dry skin is easy for you to come by during the colder months try using a gentle cleansing milk or switching to a cream cleanser. Even if your face ‘feels’ clean, it is still super important to cleanse at night to make sure all of the nasties being blown around by those howling winds are kept off our face.

Aesop Tea Tree leaf Facial Exfoliant $54

Many of our days in summer are spent relaxing in the sand and cooling off in the salty water, these two elements alone naturally exfoliate the skin and with the water as cold as ice, lets just say it wont be happening – so keep on it! Exfoliating clears away all the dead skin cells, leaving you with smooth feeling and looking skin! It stimulates circulation the regeneration of skin cells to create radiant looking skin with a natural healthy glow. But it doesn’t just stop with your pretty face, fortnightly body scrubs are the best thing you will ever add in to your beauty regime, you can thank me later for my recommendation, but when you climb into your sheets with body feeling like silk, you will feel a million bucks! TIP: Focus on areas that would normally be between the sandy shores during summer, your elbows, knees, feet.

3.     HYDRATE

It is extremely important to keep your skin and yourself hydrated throughout the cooler months. While the usual ‘moisturiser’ is the usual way to keep your skin feeling fresh, try doing it from the inside out. It is so easy to forget a glass of water when a hot coffee or chai latte is calling at 7am but keeping your water intake up in crucial. If you are still finding it hard to remember, set yourself an alarm or download an app to remind you of your daily H20 intake.

Get rich or die tryin’ – now is the time to pull the big guns out. All those heavier/richer moisturisers and night creams that felt a little too much in the summer are now ready to work their magic. Don’t slap it on, try using circular motions to improve blood circulation, brightening skin and draining the toxins. Hay fever sufferers should pull from the bottom of the inner eye to the temple; it drains out those sinuses and feels amazing. Don’t be afraid of a night cream, some may feel like these products are for more mature woman but, prevention is better cure and there is absolutely nothing wrong with letting a night cream soak in and do it’s job while you relax and unwind!

5.     SERUMS

Odacite Hydrating Skin Serum Concentrate $75

Odacite Hydrating Skin Serum Concentrate $75

Try adding serums to your regime if you haven’t already. These bad boys are a godsend for your skin.  Containing up to 70% active ingredients, compared to a moisturiser or cleaners, which can vary 5%-10%, serums target problem areas and get results fast! Whether it is fine lines, hydration, pigmentation, or a firming brighter complexion, serums have you covered. These can be used in conjunction with your normal moisturisers or on their own to avoid the heavy feeling moisturiser can give off.

6.     PAW PAW

Keep those lips of yours soft, delicate and downright kissable. Prevention is better than cure so whip on some paw paw daily! If you usually wear a lipstick or coloured gloss, try popping on some paw paw ointment about 20 mins before to keep them moist and protected. The antibacterial and antimicrobial properties were developed to treat burns, bites and wounds so if you find yourself with windburn, and extremely dry lips this is definitely a go to!

Winter is certainly a time where you will find all sorts of skin conditions flaring up out of nowhere. Eczema, dermatitis and dry itchy skin are all skin irritations that are quite common in these seasons so switching to fragrance free products can be extremely relieving and much more comfortable for you. If you find that your skin is still quite irritated after switching beauty products try changing your laundry powder!!

8.     MASKS

Hello Hair Hydrating Mask $15

Hello Hair Hydrating Mask $15

Yes, yes and yes! These months are the perfect time to hide indoors in front of your favourite movie, face mask on and wine in hand. You don’t need to do this alone, get your girls over, do a little DIY natural mask making and get it on your skin. But don’t stop there. Try adding a mask into your beauty regime on a weekly basis, a ‘deep hydrating’ mask is perfect for this time of year, try and steer clear from clay based masks as these tend to draw out the moisture from your skin. Don’t be afraid to add in hair and body masks, these will make all the difference to those lush locks come summer time!

9.     SOAKS

Long hot baths are not highly recommended as they can draw the moisture out of your skin and leave it look dry and dehydrated, but I couldn’t think of anything better than laying in a hot bath on a cold night – sometimes our body just needs to feel a big warm water cuddle! If you do jump in, add a milk bath or a bath soak to the water to make it all the more luxurious, plus, leaving your skin with that extra moisture.

I always recommend to try and keep makeup and tan to a minimum during winter, some people say it protects your skin from certain nasties but less is more and it decreases the your chances of getting dry irritated skin. BUT you got to do what you got to do! If you want to add a little summer glow, try adding some strobe highlighting cream to your upper cheek bones to make them shine when you catch a glimpse of the winter sun!

Enjoy your Winter lovers,

It was a morning of pure wedding bliss with a friendship that will last a lifetime, I was so honored when Clare asked me to do the makeup for her special day, I was bursting with excitement! We spent the months leading up to her wedding discussing dress ideas and flower options over late night cups of teas and spontaneous trips to Sydney. A time in our life we had certainly been looking forward too and had most definitely been discussed! It was a bittersweet morning for me, as the lead up had been so exciting though I was offered an opportunity to head overseas to work on a shoot, wait for it... on the SAME day! So after her incredible morning I scooted off to the airport and waited anxiously to receive these captures from Emily Jane Photographer and see Clare and Ben's magical day come to life.

Love and salt was in the air as Clare and Ben prepared for the day they had been waiting for.  Clare was quite literally dancing around the room with excitement, as one by one they were all prettied up and off to get set in their gowns. There was endless laughter, lots of tears and huge smiles that beamed throughout, lighting up the bright little room set in the coastal town of Palm Beach. When the flowers arrived, the excitement kicked in and it was game on, the room was infused with scent of native flowers and sweet smelling roses that splashed colours of pink and champagne which perfectly complimented the morning mood. I could sit here all day and speak of this incredible bride and how magical our morning was, but I will let the stunning captures from Emily Jane Photographer speak for themselves.

To Clare - Thank you for choosing me to be apart of your special day. The love our little Mooney family has for you and Ben is beyond words. We can't wait for a million more years of memories with you both. Love B + D + M. xx

It was champagne, cheese platters, love and laughs as this incredible couple prepared for their big day in separate wings of a beautiful heritage style home in the Hunter Valley, NSW. While we could hear the boys laughter from the pool, all of us girls giggled our way through the morning reminiscing on primary school romances and memories then on to the incredible story of Sophie and Cal, their first meeting, their travels and adventures, and the unforeseen future of what this glorious life will hold for them. Having known both Sophie and Cal for many years, it was an absolute honour to be apart of their wedding and to share the morning with Sophie, her beautiful mother and closest friends and watch the magic of the day she had been waiting for unfold around us. I completed her final touches with just moments before she stepped out of the bedroom and straight onto the grounds of which their party awaited, patiently, as her father walked her down the aisle to the love her life, and they became Mr + Mrs McDonald. More from Sophie below, with stunning captures by Lauren Anne Photography.

"As I walked down the aisle towards him a million thoughts were going through my head! 'How are there so many people staring at me?' 'Thank god my dad is holding my arm or I'd fall over' 'Am I walking too fast?' 'I feel sick' 'Am I walking too slow?' 'Smile, smile, try and look happy not like you're going to puke down your dress'. And, just like in a movie everything went into slow motion and I saw him standing there and we looked at each other. Even now thinking of the love and emotion in his eyes it gives me butterflies! I was not expecting to be emotional or for Cal to be either, but there were we, bubbling messes ready to spend the rest of our lives together."

IN HIS WORDS | The Proposal

Anyone who knows us can tell you it's hard to keep anything from Soph, so keeping it as a surprise was rather challenging. In the lead up to the proposal the first challenge was asking Graeme for his blessings in asking Sophie to marry me. Once I had his blessings my plans unraveled really well. I had to do a lot of groundwork for it not to appear like something was going to happen! So about a month before I proposed I said to Soph that we really should try to make time each week to go for a walk along the beach or climb Tomaree Mountain. I also used the excuse that I need to get in shape to make it look more convincing. The night before, I called Soph and said that we are starting out fitness routine tomorrow just before sunrise. I packed a backpack with water bottles, towels etc with the main aim being to hide the ring somewhere. Finally the morning arrived, Soph isn't exactly the biggest morning person, which worked well as she wasn't very attentive with her saying "who would get up at this time? Especially on a Sunday morning?”

We climbed the mountain and the timing couldn't have been any more perfect, the weather was immaculate and the sun was just starting to rise over the ocean. Soph took a seat on a rock and asked for a drink, which was the perfect opportunity for me to grab the ring. Red faced and puffing from the climb, I kneeled down on one knee and asked the love of my life to marry me!

'When I sleep, I dream of you'

"She isn't afraid to stand up for the love she believes in or the feelings in which awaken her soul. She has the power to love herself before loving another with a beauty so intriguing that she alone, makes falling in love an utmost desire. There are no need for formalities, no wish for a glorified entrance, just a moment alone with whom she longs, her 'one', her man, her absolute love."

Sunday is hands down the best day of the week. Its all about relaxation, rejuvenation and if your not too dusty, brunching and putting on that favourite outfit or pair of boyfriend jeans that makes us feel like we have our style down pat for once, cause lets be honest, it doesn’t happen every other day. Sunday is the perfect excuse for oversize anything, t-shirts, jeans, sunnies, hats and most importantly oversized coffee, a must have just like every other day. This relaxed style can most certainly be reflected in hair and makeup and so many simple things can get those Sunday vibes oozing out of you.

Makeup: Bronze those cheeks and illuminate your cheekbones. Wear minimal foundation and leave off the powder to get that sun kissed dewy look on your skin. Say no to eye shadow and hello to a nice clean mascara application. Finish off with a nice natural lip liner and some Paw Paw ointment to rehydrate those kissing tools!

Hair: Curl away then brush, brush, brush. Pin hair over your ponytail elastic. Take over the ‘Man bun’ with a gorgeous messy topknot, (girl power!) Sweep back your heavily hair sprayed hair from last night into middle part low bun and voilà, a clean, crisp and FRESH looking Sunday.

Nothing beats the look of a gal who pulls off that relaxed vibe with her all in all 'Braid'. I am absolutely obsessed. Such a simple yet diverse style that can be incorporated into any look to suit everybody. Pull it tight, let it loose or tear it apart - braids are the ultimate go-to style for weddings, festivals and your every day glam.

Some of my favourite Braided looks getting around below.

Just when you thought Friday's couldn't get any better, I'll soon be offering $45 FRIDAYS for all Newcastle and Port Stephens based clients for bookings made between 2pm-7pm. Bring your champagne, your gals and get your glam done for your next night out! #FRIYAY

I was running late for work this morning due to some unbearable cold weather that forced me to stay in bed a little longer. Snuggled up in bed with the lights out was me checking out the 'Artist Group' website containing some of Australia's most amazing Makeup Artists. Noni Smith caught my eye.
